Dear Parents or Guardians,
I am excited to have your child in my class this year! We are going to have an awesome year filled with many opportunities for learning and fun.
We are fully implementing the Common Core standards this year. The goal is that every child will be college or career ready upon graduation.
This means that your child will experience learning opportunities that require a deeper, more complex way of thinking. I will encourage your child to collaborate with peers, draw pictures, and explain answers using complete sentences. Please also encourage this behavior at home when completing class assignments.
About Mrs. Otteson:
I’m beginning my 14th year of teaching for Palm Springs Unified School District. I feel blessed to be living out my lifelong dream of being a teacher. My husband also works as a teacher for the district. I have 4 children (3 boys and 1 girl). Two of them attend school at Rio Vista
in 4th and 1st grades. The other 2 attend Montessori School of Palm Springs. When I’m not at work I enjoy spending time with my family and
friends. I also enjoy baking, hiking, and watching movies.
Weekly/Daily Scheduled Events:
This year your child will participate in library, physical education, and music every week. Your child will need appropriate shoes and a water bottle for physical education. Here is the schedule:

Homework:
Your child will be assigned homework Monday through Thursday. The most critical skill your child can work on at home is reading.
Please require your child to read (alone or to you) every night for 15 minutes. Ask your child questions about the story to check for
understanding.
How to reach Mrs. Otteson:
Don’t hesitate to call me if you have any questions or concerns! I’ve included my cell phone number in case you have a concern that can’t wait until the next day. Email or text messages are best for me, but you may also call.
I strongly believe that your child will have the greatest opportunity for a successful year if you and I work closely together.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Laura Otteson
